 Extractions
After tooth extraction, there are
three things that need to be controlled: Bleeding, Pain and Infection.
Bleeding -
After extraction of one or more teeth, the dentist will place a thick layer of
gauze over the extraction site and direct you to place pressure on the gauze.
This pressure is the best way to control the bleeding and allow a proper clot to
form. Normally, after 30 minutes to one hour, the gauze can be removed and
the bleeding will have stopped. Some minor oozing may occur for a while.
This is normal. If significant bleeding should occur, another thick layer
of gauze should be placed over the extraction site and pressure applied for at
least one hour without changing the gauze. Another option is to place a
tea bag over the site and bite for one hour. If significant bleeding
continues after this time, call the dentist at 817-295-7116 for further
instructions.
Pain - The local anesthetic (Novocaine) used to
numb the extraction area will usually last from 30 minutes to 2 hours after the
extraction. The dentist will usually prescribe some pain medicine to help
control the pain in the next few hours. Normally, it is best to take the
pain medicine as soon as possible so that it will be working when the numbness
wears off. Be sure and follow instructions on the prescription. NOTE - most prescription pain medicines can cause drowsiness and
reduce reaction time. Do not drive or operate dangerous machinery within 4
hours of taking the pain medicine. If you are having severe pain several
hours after the extraction and pain medicine is not helping, call the dentist at
817-295-7116.
Infection - If the dentist was concerned about
infection already present or that infection might develop, he may have
prescribed antibiotics. If so, be sure and get the prescription filled and
start taking it as soon as possible. The primary sign of infection is
swelling. If you notice a significant increase in swelling in the first
few days after an extraction, call the dentist at 817-295-7116 and let him know.
